CUADERNO DE VIAJE - CHINCHON {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK - CHINCHÓN - SPAIN}
- At the doorstep of Madrid, in our way to the south of Spain, here is where we are going to stop and sleep for one night. If you want to step back in time, this is the place to do it. Few places in Europe boast a Medieval village as well preserved.
- Above the plaza, the skyline is dominated by the Renaissance Church of the Assumptionand the town’s famous Clock Tower. The pastel-coloured Lope de Vega Theatre is also visible to the left of the church. Oddly, over the church altar is a masterpiece by Goya, whose brother once served as chaplain here.
- Its Plaza Mayor, a classic medieval square of popular architecture, built between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is considered one of the most beautiful in the world for its haramony and proportions. In its arcades you can find inns, bars, restaurants, bakeries, shops of products, drinks and typical crafts of Chinchón. Throughout its history there have been many activities that have been developed inside: Corral de comedias, royal parties, proclamations, bullfightings since 1502, executions, sacramental services and lately a film by Wes Anderson (Oscar winner for the Pianist).
- Walking through its streets in the upper area of the town is another pleasure, you can also find small chapels where images like this one of the Virgin of the Cave look to which we have sung so many times so that it rains.
- Our dinner was at La Villa restaurant where we enjoyed some of the good products of a very good quality. Besides, the restaurant is just in the plaza so the view at night was gorgeous.
- We slept at the Parador of Chinchón which is located in a former Augustinian Monastery. It offers large windows, beautiful common areas and guest rooms decorated with exquisite taste. Our room really had a view of the awesome gardens that you can visit which is full of fruit trees, aromatic and vegetable orchards and spaces that invite you to relax and enjoy, at least me who love gardens and flowers.
- Founded by the Counts of Chinchón in the seventeenth century. During the War of Succession hosted Archduke Carlos during a converence. Over time it became a center of liberal education. The Parador offers you a guided tour around the Parador that lasts 15 minutes and it´s quite interesting.
- We left the Parador quite early, but before we managed to walk around the gardens and really enjoyed it. This must be crazy in Spring because some trees had already blossomed.
