CUADERNO DE VIAJE GRECIA {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK, GREECE}

SANTORINI
5/6/7/8 - AGOSTO 2013 / 5th/6th/7th/8th AUGUST 2013

Día 1 / Day 1

Our flight from Athens to Santorini was so short that I only have time to read 2 pages of my book!.
The island of Santorini is a part of Greece. It is located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea, just north to the island of Crete and is surrounded by a sea with countless islands. At its previous form, before the volcanic eruption, it was round shaped. Today, it constitutes a complex of five islands, which belong to the cyclades, with Santorini being the larger amongst them. The others are Thirassia, Aspronissi and the volcanic islands of Palea and Nea Kameni.
Santorini now has half-moon shape. A series of enormous volcanic explosions alternated the islands landscape and formed the breathtaking steep cliffs called the Caldera. Its geological energy and its unique wild beauty contribute to why it is ranked as a top worldwide tourist destination.

I love my hotel...everything is white and blue.
Mi habitación

My room

The breathtaking view from the terrace of my room

And the swimming pool, after everything is organised. We needed to relax a bit after the walking tours in Athens.

We showered and went to have dinner. Sunset in here is quite spectacular. Temperature couldn´t be better, 22ºC.

Día 2 / Day 2

At 10.00 a.m., George (our new tour guide), comes to pick us up and we left to "discover" this beautiful island.

First stop, village of Episopi Gonia and its church Panagia Episkopi. This island has a very special colour, I don´t know if it´s the light, the houses, the white walls......

And then to the beautiful traditional village of Pyrgos. It used to be the capital of the island until 1800s. The village consists of traditional houses built around a Venetian castle, and the small streets that follow the natural flow of the surrounding landscape. The houses are the perfect example of Cycladic design and in superb condition.

The stairs to access the villages in Santorini are a pain and shoes suffer a lot really.

But when you reach the top of the hill, you realised how much beauty you would have missed if you didn´t go up the sloping stairs.

We ended up this visit in a family vineyard, Gavalas, in Megalochori, (pronounced Megalohori).  We tasted the wine (Vinsanto) and after we headed to Akrotiri, archaelogical site of a prehistoric settlement. The archeological site of Akrotiry, one of the most important sites in Greece, is open to visitors after eight years of restoration work. The remarakable accomplishments of an extremely advanced civilization were buried under the volcanic lava in 1613 BC.

Thanks to some frescos style and inscriptions, historians found out the inhatitants of this settlement were associated to the Minoan civilization. The paintings show the life of the people in that area.

Following a cycle route, you can discover part of the well preserved ancient city.
Esta foto no es mía / This picture is not mine

We´ve spent four wonderful hours with George and he left us at the hotel and I´m dying to swim a bit. It´s so peaceful in here, I´m really looking forward to this now.

Quick shower and ready to visit Firá.

Firá is awesome. It´s the capital of Santorini, offering amazing view to the volcano and its 587 broad steps (whatever you may call them). When the huge ships are in port and tourists are ashore, they have the chance to climb up from the port by riding a donkey or by using the cable car. As I haven´t travelled by ship or even arrived to the port I´m not going to use the donkeys to go anywhere, but you always have the chance to see them around. The city is breathtaking.

When we looked down towards the sea, and to our astonishment, we saw there are many swimming pools and terraces anywhere.

We had a wonderful dinner in a restaurant which name is Assyrtico and that I´m going to recommend. Here

Día 3 / Day 3

Another beautiful morning. No clouds in the sky. I took these pictures during and after breakfast.

George came back again to take us to the Wine Museum. We will visit Kamari beach later on and after that, in Megalochori,  I´m attending a Greek cuisine cooking class I couldn´t resist. We will eat whatever we cook. To enter the Museum, we have to go down down the stairs....well obviously, we are in Santorini!!.

After the visit and some wine tasting, we headed to Kamari beach. The sand in this beach is black. It brings me back memories of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands(Spain). There you have 5 km beach to enjoy.

We walked around Megalochori, until we arrived to the restaurant.

Nobody can say this is a crowded village, can´t they?. Not a single soul in the streets.

This craft shop was beautiful, what a shame I wasn´t alone!!...

Here we are, the restaurant is so beautiful. Its name is "Spiti".

I can´t believe we´re going to cook outdoors, under olive trees and bouganvillas...it´s great!.

We met a couple from Positano (Italy) in here, and I can tell you we had a blast. The recipes will come in another post, for now some pictures. Luca, was giving us all the cooking instructions to make the tomato fritters, Greek salad and fava, which was for everybody, then the other couple chose fish and we prefered meat.
Incluso mi I. puso manos a la obra.

Even my I. got down to it!!!.

While George was making the fava (which is like a humus), following his mom´s recipe, we were frying the fritters.
¡Estaban buenísimos!.

They were really good!.

We went on with the meat and fish and finally we had lunch under a huge olive tree and the weather was fantastic. This is comfort really, we enjoyed it!.

The excursion ended up here. We said bye to George, we really enjoyed his company and his knowledge about the island. We arrived at the hotel at about 5.00 p.m. and I know where exactly I´m going to be 5 minutes later.

Today, we´re going to have dinner to Oia (pronounced EA). It´s one of the 4 spectacular towns, perched on the crescent shaped clifftop of the caldera. It is far better to arrive in the early evening, allowing plenty of time to meander or simply walk through those white houses in the white streets and with such special light. Tourists that are in the west part of the city, come to Oia to see the sunset but I must say I´m really fortunate to see it from my  hotel room, so no need to rush.

We decided to go with the flow and obviously against the crowd who was anxiously going towards the point where they could watch the sunset. Stairs or whatever you call them, are terrible in this city, but landscape from any point is awesome.

Donkeys in here go up and down tirelessly.

We were all relaxed having a drink at this bar, watching everbody rushing up and down. We asked the owner of the bar for a restaurant that Tina, from our hotel, recommended us previously. It was the 1800, which happened to be very close. The owner suggested us to go down to the port, to Ammoudi and eat in "The Katina",  if we wanted to eat really good fish, very fresh and grilled. The bad news about that was that there were 250 stairs (stairs like the ones in here, not our stairs). Ok I said to my I. , as long as he didn´t want me to go come back up again after dinner. I don´t think it was the best idea really. The Katina restaurant was full.

The view?, breathaking. With every new step we took, they were improving, but my mood wasn´t. My knees were shaking. You have to be careful because it´s the same path the donkeys use, so you must watch your step constantly.

Half way, I broke my sandal, the one I´ve spent my summer with. By now, my mood went from very good, to so so and then to cranky.

I can´t believe people live in here. There are also many hotels and restaurants which look toward the caldera. Half way to go...restaurants down there.

I must say, I couldn´t point my camera correctly, couldn´t even change the controls or focus it, who could possibly take focused pictures under these conditions and really in a cranky mood?, well I suppose I need to improve and practice more.

Next time I want to eat fish in here, I´ll tell the taxi to leave us down here so I won´t have to go all the way. I bought a pair of flip flops when I arrived to the port.

I must say, dinner was fantastic and my mood went back from cranky to very good in the blink of an eye!!. We ended up having dinner at the Ammoudi Fish Tavern.

Día 4 / Day 4

We got up early and went to visit the 2 museums of Firá. We ended the tour quite early, so we walked around the city. There weren´t many people in the street. One was the prehistorical museum and the other with paintings from local painters.

The hotel kindly offered us the spa showers so we could spend the day sunbathing because we had to check out at 11.30. We spent the day in the swimming pool and at 5 we took the ferry this time to our next destination.

The day before, there was a wedding in the hotel. The couple´s room was decorated with flowers.

And so we left, by ferry, sad because now I was getting used to these stairs I have to leave.
COSAS QUE NO DEBES HACER EN SANTORINI / THINGS YOU MUSN´T DO IN SANTORINI

1)Ride on a donkey. It´s quite expensive, around 10Euros per person. The donkey master, doesn´t let you at the end of the path, they ask you to get off. If you refuse, they get downright nasty. Besides the animals are abused.

Les he cogido cariño incluso.

2) Not to take lovely sandals to this island. This summer I´ve used mine all the time and I was sad I broke one. Besides, they are comfy and not slippery.

3) Here, the weather is cool at night, take a sweather with your, or just a shawl.

COSAS QUE HEMOS COMIDO EN SANTORINI / THINGS WE´VE EATEN IN SANTORINI

Besides some of the recipes we had already eateh in Athens, we tried this.

And we ate here one of our favourite desserts in Greece. Lukumas, sort of fried petit choux it has donut flavour, it´s delish.
