ATENAS - ATHENS
2/3/4 y 5 de Agosto 2013
  1. 2nd/3rd/4th and 5th August 2013
DIA 1
  1. DAY 1
  1. After taking two planes, well it sounds quite quick when you write it), we´re finally on Greek land. The main topic of our conversation with our driver was merely about the situation of the country with the crisis and about gastronomy.
  2. It´s after 6.00 pm when we arrived to our hotel, so by the time we were ready for a walk, it was almost dinner time.

  1. We headed towards the "Plaka", which is the old part of the historical city centre of the capital. For me, one of the most amazing and attractive places in the city, full of labirynthing streets and neoclassical architecture, tiny and always on a slope.
  1. No problem in here, streets are full of people.
Brettos Bar.
  1. A must in Plaka, Brettos Bar. It offers a variety of liquour,, spirits and wines of various tastes, origins etc. Colours in an atmosphere surrounding, it´s a place worth visiting, even for non-drinkers.
  1. We had dinner in a nice and local restaurant called "Daphne´s" and the food was delish. The next morning we started early, it´s very hot there.
Dia 2 / Day 2
  1. At 9.00 am somebody picked us up to visit the Acropolis. I was dying to go really.
  1. In the middle of the 5th century BC., Athens was grandiose and powerful. The enchanting capital of Greece, and thanks to the Pericles´political system, became one of the most democratic city in the ancient world. isn´t this incredible?. Once he controlled the wars against his enemies, Persia in one side and on the other Esparta, he finally achieved one of his most important porjects, which was to transform the Acropolis and turn it into the most grandiose architectonical sample of that moment. Obviously in his crew, a group of open minded people like himself.
  1. The Parthenon, is a temple dedicated to the maiden goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron deity. It´s construction lasted 9 years though they spent some more in decoration matters. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, democracy and one of the world´s greates cultural monuments.
Las vistas desde ahí arriba son espectaculares.
  1. The view from there is awesome.
El Agora Griega
  1. The Greek Agora
El Templo de Zeus Olímpico
  1. The Zeus Olimpic Temple
  1. A caryatid, is a sculptedd female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column. The best known and most copied examples are those of the six figures of thte caryatid Porch of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis. This is awesome really and not even one cloud in the sky. It´s funny one of those six figures is nowadays in the British Museum in London. The ones in the picture are copies, the original ones are in The Acropolis Museum in Athens of course.
El Teatro de Dionisos
  1. Theatre of Dionysos.
  1. We stayed in the Acropolis for about two hours and the heat together with the walking tour was tiring. Be careful when you finally reach the parking zone and you find the only bar to buy a bottle of still water. The small bottle cost 3 euros!!! and believe me, you can´t resist it because you are exhausted and thirsty when you get there and need water desperately.
  1. Now we are in the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which is a colosal ruined temple in the centre of Athens and dedicated to Zeus, King of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th BC but it wasn´t completed until the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century. During the Roman periods, it was renowned as the largest temple in Greece.
  1. The view from here towards the Acropolis is spectacular.
  1. We drove to the ancient Greek Stadium. The Panathenaic Stadium was built entirely of white marble, it hosted the first modern Olympic games in 1896. The tradition of lightiing the Olympic flame takes place during a ceremony in the ruins of the Temple of Hera. The torch is lit, by focusing the rays of the sun and then the torch is carried to this stadium, so the first runner carrying the torch starts at this point and then carried by relay to the host city of the games. Oh and if you hwant to see the stadium, you also have to pay.
  1. And from there, we went to see a changing of the guard in Suntagma Square. It´s quite surprising really, specially the movements the soldiers made with their legs, like in a slow motion dance Our guide explained to us that inside those pompons, the soldiers carried knives,, so to surprise the enemy. They started with these movements and at certain moment stuck the knife inside the other´s body. I haven´t been able to verify this story, so it´s just something curious to write about.
  1. Going through Ermon Avenue, we went to the old Agora, which is situated in Monastiraki. I stayed in the Agora taking pictures while my I. went up to the Temple of Phaestos and to the Museum, it was really got, suffocating.
  1. The agora was the central spot in ancient Greek. The meaning of the word is "gathering place" so agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city. The ancient agora of Athens, was the best known example of democracy.
  1. And now, to the Roman agora with the Tower of the winds. It´s clear that Romans and Greeks didn´t get on very well together, so they didn´t share agoras. Each culture had it´s own.
  1. We trudge through the streets and went to the flea market.
  1. We had lunch in a family restaurant, outside the city centre just for only 20 euros.
  1. After lunch, Yani our guide, drove us to the Mount Lycabettus. You can ascend by a funicular if you want to. Popular stories tell this mountain was once the refugee of wolves. The name means "the one that is walked by wolves". This is the highest point of the city.
  1. Our 8 hours tour with Yani is going to end in the Acropolis Museum. You know, when I said I was going to Athens, some people told me that all the museums there were nice, okay but full of pottery. Believe me, both museums are impressive, full of history and though the Archeological museum is bigger than the Acropolis, this last one is beautiful. You can´t miss it. People is not allowed to take pictures inside the museum, so I have only one from the entrance. As you can see, if you pick up a stone in Greece, you find a ruin underneath.
  2. Here is the link to it if you want to see more.
Dia 3
  1. Day 3
Desayunamos con unas vistas espectaculares.
  1. We had breakfast enjoying an awesome view.
Seguimos nuestras visitas con el Museo arqueológico. No tengo palabras, impresionante.
  1. We spent the whole morning at the archaelogical Museum.
  2. More info in here
view.
  1. That day was the day of a walking tour by ourselves. Starting from the September 3rd Avenue towards Omonia Square. My I. had a mad already, which is something he loves, to read maps. We tried to see the market but as it was Sunday, the market was closed. This is a sightseeing tour too. We passed through Monastiraki and went back to the Plaka to see it under the daylight. We walked along Avenida Venizelou and went to Kolinaki. The Cathedral was being refurbished, so we couldn´t visit it and finally we had lunch in a small restaurant in front of the Monument of Lisistrades. We went to take some rest because Yani was going to come to pic us up at 7.00 pm to go to Cape Sounion and watch the sunset from the Poseidon Temple.

  1. On our way to Cape Sounion, we stopped in the Lake Vouliagmeni. It´s in the south of town and very close to the sea. This is a rare geophysical formation. It was once a large cavern that collapsed followiing an earthquake, probably during the early Middle ages. Because of its constant and comfortable water temperature of 22º, the lake functions as a year natural spa. If you want to spend a day in here, it costs 12 euros, sun loungers included.
  1. This picture above is not mine. We went through Voskiza and Lagonissi and finally, after 50 minutes driving we arried at Cape Sounion. The Greeks are all relaxed today, it´s Sunday and beaches are loaded.
Finalmente llegamos a Cabo Sounion, qué maravilla!!.
  1. I must say it´s quite complicated to adapt Greek mythology in the historyof the country, at the same time it makes it much more interesting I would say. Finally we arrived in Cape Sounion, this is awesome!.
  1. According to the legend, Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, King of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean sea. Aegeos, anxiously looking out for Sounion, despaired when he saw a black sail on his son Theseus´s ship, returning from Crete. He thought that his son had been killed in his battle against the Minotaurn, a monster that was half man and half bull.
  1. We decided to go to have dinner to Mikrolimano instead of going back to the hotel, so Yani takes us to this special part of Piraeus which is the most picturesque harbour. Traditional fish taverns among with luxury restaurants are located down the small harbour. I don´t like overcooked fish and in the end after saying i so many times they cooked it 10 minutes less than the set time. During summer months, the harbour is loaded.

COSAS QUE NO DEBES HACER EN ATENAS / THINGS YOU MUSN´T DO IN ATHENS.

  1. 1)Take with you your best stilettos and pretend to have a walking tour around the Acropolis as if you were a superstar. No way!, you must wear flat and if the sole is not slippery, much much better!. When you walk, you have to watch your step constantly, the city is pretty old you know.
2)Protección solar extrema. El sol "casca" pero bien.
  1. 2) High factor creams, believe me sun beats down.
  1. 3)Never buy a brim hat that doesn´t fit well, (my head is pretty big), because it could fly away the moment you reach the highest point of the Acropolis. A brim hat will pick up the wind like it has wings of its own. Well this is exactly what happened to me, my hat flew away and onto a zone we weren´t able to step in.

COSAS QUE HEMOS TOMADO EN ATENAS /THINGS WE´VE EATEN IN ATHENS
Y por supuesto
  1. And of course
  1. We left Athens thinking the Greeks have been extremely kind, though sometimes you may think they are bad tempered, but believe me, when we asked for something, they always helped us, showed us the way and when they found out we were Spanish, they were supportive and happy to have us around, all recommendations were given for free with kind faces...I didn´t know they were so kind.
