MONT SAINT MICHEL

1. A rocky peak emerging from the middle of the shore, stones imported from the Isles of Chausey and timber frames mix in the architecture of the village and its ring of fortifications, just like in the buildings of the "Wonders of the West" whose monastic buildings were principally erected in the 13th century. We woke up that day looking forward to the visit and not in a hurry, we wanted to go to Mont Saint Michel and take it easy. I had seen so many pictures of the area that I was impatient to finally see the famous destination in spite of the 350 stairs to reach the highest point.

Para los visitantes que nos acercamos en coche, el sistema de transporte para acceder al lugar está muy bien organizado. Se aparcan en unos aparcamientos bastante lejos de la entrada, pero allí mismo disponen de unos autobuses gratuitos. Es en ese momento en el que te das cuenta de que ¡no estas solo!, de que te acompaña la marabunta, porque los buses están hasta los topes. Los autobuses paran a 400 metros de la entrada principal, ese recorrido se hace andando.

1. For visitors arriving by car, a parking area is reserved which is located close to the departure site of free shuttles. These, stop at 400 metres of the site. When you go into the shuttle you realise that you´re not alone, the crowd is going with you to the same place because shuttles are loaded.

Hay que tener en cuenta algunas cosas antes de visitar MSM. Otra atracción añadida son las mareas. Las mareas alrededor de la isla suben y bajan rápidamente. Durante siglos muchísima gente ha fallecido por exceso de confianza. Hay una excursión por el agua cuando las mareas están bajas, pero solo puede hacerse en compañía de un profesional y de un guía con muchísima experiencia. No se puede asumir que si cuando se empieza a caminar, y el agua llega a los tobillos, que haya tiempo suficiente para cruzar todo el camino. Hacer caso a todas las advertencias y todo irá bien.

1. Some tips to have in mind when travelling to MSM. The most important thing to remeber when thinking about safety at the site is that the tides around the island rise and fall extremely rapidly. Many, many people have perished over the course of the centuries because they thought they knew better than those who would undoubtedly have advised them not to do it. It is possible to journey across the water at low tide, but you must only do this when in the company of a professional and very experienced guide. Don´t ever assume that because the water is only ankle deep when you start out, that you have plenty of time to make a crossing. Heed the warnings and you will be fine.

El Mont Saint Michel solamente tiene una calle que curiosamente se llama "La Grand Rue" (La calle grande) que es por donde acceden los turistas. Una calle peatonal ¡llena!, y que a pesar del nombre que lleva es estrecha, en cuesta y con un suelo bastante irregular, guay ¿eh?.

1. For all purposes, Mont St. Michel has a single street "La Grande Rue"! (The big road), that is accesible to tourists. This street offers pedestrian access only, and despite its promising name, is in fact narrow and steep, cool eh?.

Además, las tiendas y los restaurantes están por todas partes lo que hace que la gente de vueltas por aquí y para allá, y se pare en mitad de la calle. La cantidad de personal te ataca un poco los nervios en ciertos trayectos, hay que pensar que es el único acceso al monasterio. La gente que va con niños pequeños y gente con poca movilidad tiene que tener en cuenta que el suelo de la calle es tremendamente irregular. La combinación de adoquines, congestión y la cuesta es una locura para las sillitas de niños y las sillas de ruedas. Menos mal que según subes, el camino se despeja y la vista es espectacular.

1. In addition to the shops and the restaurants which cause people to mill around and linger on this street, the congestion is exacerbated by the fact that this is the only access to the monastery. People visiting with small children or people with impaired mobility should also note that the street is cobbled. The combination of cobbles, congestion and steep slope add up to a nightmare scenario for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Thank god that when you approach a higher zone, the view is spectacular, that makes worth the visit.

Y seguimos subiendo. Además de la abadía, existen otros monumentos en la roca como la Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro, que es una capilla pequeña y preciosa edificada desde los siglos XV y XVI.

1. And we kept on going up. Besides de Abbey, there are other monuments in the rocks, like Parish of St-Pierre, which is a small chappel, beautiful by the way, edificed from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Y ya no os puedo contar mucho más, porque según llegábamos a la abadía, nos encontramos con esto. A partir de aquí, media hora de espera y después la entrada. Así que no puedo dar información porque no pudimos entrar. Frustrante, lo se, pero aquí lo dejo

Y bajamos, hacía muchísimo calor, pero al menos nos paramos a admirar la vista.

1. And we started to go down, it was really hot. At least admiring the view.

Paramos para comer algo y nos fuímos. Hacía muchísimo calor la verdad.

1. We stopped in this place to have something to eat. It was really hot so we finally left.

Estuvimos en Mont Saint Michel 3 horas y media y nos costó el parking 12.50 euros. De camino a Saint Malo la zona rural es espectacular.

1. We spent three hours and a half in Mont Saint Michel and it cost us 12.50 Euros. On our way to Saint Malo we were lucky to admire the countryside which is awesome.

Decidimos desviarnos hacia Saint James, yo quería ver uno de los cementerios americanos del desembarco de Normandía, siempre me acuerdo del principio de la película "Salvar al soldado Ryan" y aunque el cementerio de la película está en Colleville sur mer, éste en Saint James es impresionante.

1. We changed our mind in the last minute, I wanted to see one of the american cemeteries of those who fought in the Normandy landing. I always remember those scenes in the film "Save Soldier Ryan" and though I know that cemetery is in Colleville sur mer, this one in Saint James is huge and impressive.

Este lugar es un remanso de paz, pero se te ponen los pelos de punta de pensar que aquí yacen 4410 soldados, muy muy jóvenes. No podía dejar de pensar en sus madres, mandas a tu hijo a la guerra al otro lado del mundo, y se quedan allí para siempre.....es terrible.

1. This place is a place or safety, a sanctuary ...so quiet. When I went in I inmediately got goose bumps. I Can´t think about those mothers who sent their children to fight in a war accross the Atlantic and they never returned.......it´s terrible.

Y volvemos a la carretera, los pueblos y el paisaje en esta zona son preciosos.

1. And back to the road and to admire the countryside and villages which in this area are beautiful.

¡Nos vamos hacia Saint Malo!. Tenía muchísimas ganas de llegar. Iba a ser nuestro último destino, básicamente para descansar, pasear y admirar.

1. And we were on our way to Saint Malo!. I was looking forward to arriving really. It was going to be our last destiny and was dying to rest a bit, take shor walks and admire the view.

Ah, creo que me he enamorado de Saint Malo.

Cuando llegamos de las excursiones de ese día, nos dió tiempo de pegarnos una ducha y salir a pasear otra vez. La verdad es que esta ciudad es preciosa. El paseo al centro por la bahía dura media hora desde nuestro hotel. Cenamos en el centro y volvimos al hotel andando con toda tranquilidad.

1. When we arrived to Saint Malo from our tour that day, we had time to have a quick shower and get out again. The truth is that this town is beautiful. The walk along the bay lasts half an hour. We had dinner and came back again walking and enjoying the view.

1. We were told that those pieces of wood were like that to control the waves when the tides come closer.

1. As we were aproaching the centre, the sky was getting darker.
