NOS VAMOS A SORIA {LET´S GO TO SORIA - SPAIN}

  1. Did it surprise you when you saw the title?. Would you die to be able to say that sentence nowadays?, let´s go here, let´s go there......well...things will come to an end soon I guess. Today, finally we were able to have a walk, so little by little. Soon we will be able to travel to another province and I will see people I haven´t seen for ages.
  1. I´m going to dream a little bit while writing this post remembering that excursion with my I. that 13th April 2017 (God, three years have flown already), that route was a wonderful surprise because it´s gorgeous. I have to say we only visited a small part of the province and we want more. Our first stop, San Esteban de Gormaz
  1. San Esteban de Gormaz was declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble and when you walk through its streets, you can smell that Middle ages aroma coming from its defensive walls. The fortress played a strategical role in the tug-of-war between Muslims and Christians. We are in the best place to feel the Sorian Romanesque style. On the hillside where San Esteban is located many of the cave engravings in Cueva de las Salinas were found and also some examples of the Celtiberian and Roman presence in the area. El Cid was exiled and crossed Sorian lands, and at that same time after many years of blood and battles, the Christians occupied this town that was under Muslim domain. From this point on, Christian buildiings began to be built, mostly of Romanesque style: the church of San Miguel, an architectonical masterpiece, and the church of Santa María del Rivero.
  1. The Church of San Miguel is the oldest Sorian Romanesque church that still stands today, and is one of the monuments with the most amount of Muslim architectonical features. According to an inscription in the gallery, it was built in 1081and we can say that it is the prototype of churches with a porticoed gallery, possiby the first Romanesque porticoed gallery that has been recorded.
  1. With a single nave, it ends in a semicircular apse.
Siguiente parada, El Burgo de Osma.
  1. This ancient and monumental episcopal city is located near the Ucero River and there we can see one of the province´s best preserved medieval quarters. The town has been declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble. The truth is that is gorgeous, with it´s town square, that presents a 18th century Baroque style in which there are quite a few magnificent buildings where you can find San Agustin Hospital and also a typical Castilian houses example.
  1. And also, we had the chance to "test" local delicacies. By that time we were starving. Now I´m looking at the pictures here drinking in the bars, I was thinking if we will ever feel normal again some day like we did before this virus.
  1. The Cathedral was closed when we planned the visit in the morning, I don´t know why Churches are closed when you want to go and see them, we had to pay 1 Euro to a woman in San Estaban de Gormaz to have the Church opened, but there were no way with the Cathedral. We found out that we could visit it during certain hours, so we didn´t miss the chance. We were in Holy Thursday so everything wasa ready for procession.
  1. Once we got inside, we had enough time to discover artistic treasures ranging from the purest Romanesque to the most recent Neoclassical styles that the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción keeps safe inside.
  1. Another thing you have to visit in Soria is "El cañón de Rio lobos". If you go, do it early in the morning, not at the time we went, because it was after lunch, the sun was high and it was really hot. Don´t forget to wear walking shoes too, (I wasn´t wearing those either) because it´s a long way to the Cañón. In the end, we walked for a while, returned and picked up the car, because you can also drive there. The Canyon offers visitors a wide range of excursions, trails and activities.
  1. It was declared Natural Park in 1985 to protect its geological features, fauna and flora as well as conditioning it for visitors.
  1. It is a deep 25kilometre long calcareous canyon formed by the erosion of the Lobos River passing through this land. It forms a karst landscape with some cenotes and several caves, hills and sinkholes on the surface, and aquifers and underground rivers deep in the earth.
  1. This deep canyon´s walls are populated with different species of animas, but the most representative one is the griffon vultures.
  1. With a resident population of 135 nesting couples, the Griffon Vulture, is the super star of the show for most visitors to the Canyon. The park is also the breeding ground for other type of vultures, like the Egyptian Vulture with 7 nesting couples and home for the other species, regional, national and international interest.
  1. And back to the car and on our way to Soria, the capital, passing by a small village called Catalañazor, where we stopped the car to walk through its forest which was beautiful. With its castle at the top and its singular trees.
  1. We arrived in Soria just in time to have a nice walk in the park and beore dinner, watch the Procession pass by.
  1. To visit this city, 4 hours are enough. You have to walk through its parks, plazas and streets, it´s the only way to discover every corner.
  1. The capital has certain poetry air thanks to the works of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Antonio Machado. both were inspired by the stately homes to create a universe of legends and mysteries about the Knights Templar who lived on the Duero.
  1. We spent the night in Hotel Leonor, a small and charming hotel in the center that was great, and after resting for a while, we went out again to have dinner and see the religious easter procession. It had been ages since I saw one, we don´t have that anymore.
  1. More about Soria here Soria and I have to say that we left the city that morning leaving spring behind. Will we have a normal spring next year?.
