2. CUADERNO DE VIAJE ZAKYNTHOS {T. NOTEBOOK ZAKYNTHOS}

Agosto 2016
ZAKYNTHOS
  1. It´s a Greek Island. The ancient Greek poet Homer mentioned the island in the Iliad and the Odyssey, stating that the first inhabitants of it were the son of King Dardanos of Troy called Zakynthos and his men. Zakynthos was inhabited from the Neolithic Age, as some archaelogical excavations have proved. The picture above is the statue, representing the Glory to which the national poet Dionysios Solomos addresses his poems. People of Zakynthos is really proud of it, well this is a personal opinion because its in every postcard I´ve seen. I must confess that this is the first time I´ve heard about this island, or well, at least I don´t remember if I´ve read about it.

  1. The plans for that day were to visit the beaches in the south, ok we lost the bus that was going to take us there, so we left the ship with the thought of taking a walking tour by ourselves and swim in the beaches around the city. We are in Zante. The best thing to do in here is to bring a boat, huge or small and sail from beach to beach, jump and swim, because beaches in here are terrible full of pebbles, impossible to lay your towel and relax. On the other side, water is gorgeous.
  1. We swam in this "beach", as you can see we didn´t mean to go back again. Best thing to understand is to see. It was impossible even wearing flip-flops.
  1. Just to add a bit of cultural details to this notebook, I will point that some ancient ruins, wall paintings in the churches of the Byzantine period and ancient coins testify the flourish past culture of the island.
  2. Literature origins dated back to the 15th Centure, when the island poets were popular for their poems, prose, and the translation of texts from ancient Greek to the spoken language.
  3. The first affects in painting came from Byzantine art. The first painters dedicate themselves to religious themes representing holy icons in churches and utilizing the technique of egg tempera on wood. In the 18th Century, the art of the silver engraving and of the wooden sculpture developed and the works were exhibited and admired especially in churches.
  4. The Byzantine Museum in Zante has a rich collection of portable icons that the visitor can admire, magnificent wooden carved iconostases, as long as paintings and oils on canvas from the Byzantine years.
  5. In the city of Zakynthos before the earthquake in 1840, there were elegant buildings and common houses so as many churches.
  6. The Venetian influence favoured the construction of public buildings, roads and bridges that improved the city asset and between 1840 and 1870 many neo-classical buildings were constructed showing the combination of Venetian and baroque style.
  7. Nowadays, the islanders live on tourism in the Summer months (May to October) and on agriculture in Winter. The most important agricultural production is olive oil, grapevine, citruses and raisins.
  1. A walk around the city. I must say though, that the village has all the services and it´s quiet.
  1. Zakyntos is an island of big contrasts. Beaches with blue waters, gorgeous water but without sand (sad) due to their massive rocky coasts. A Mediterranean temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers (my I. happy, I´m more a winter person, for me it was very hot). The generous winter rains favour the growth of thick vegetation, that´s why the island is so green and assure a remarkable water reserve. If you plan to take a taxi in the taxi stop, well forget it. We stayed there for a long time, we wanted to visit the other part of the island and it was impossible. Nobody hurries in here.
  1. Oh I almost forgot to write about turtles in here. The Caretta Caretta Turtle is a specimen still living in the Mediterranean and it is possible to meet it there since it spawns along the beaches of the Laganas Gulf. So the city is full of any form of turtle in shops and other places. They are massive, they can have considerable dimensions, the big ones weight 140kg and they can swim really fast.
  1. And that´s all, I´ll finish with a party which is one of the best ways to end the day.
¡LISTO! / DONE!
