DOMINGO DE PASCUA, VA DE HUEVOS {EASTER SUNDAY}

I´m sure that if I started to ask Spanish people who colour easter eggs, about the origin of this tradition,  (I don´t have memories of such celebration in my childhood), I´m sure not even one of them would be able to answer my question,(well I must confess I didn´t know anything about it).

(Me he documentado un poco)

The tradition comes from Eastern countries, where they were given as presents, as the seed of life and to celebrate the beginning of Spring. (I´ve read about this a little bit before writing about it).

Easter rabbit is another story. The Easter Bunny is a rabbit-spirit. Long ago, he was called the "Easter Hare", hares and rabbits have frequent multiple births so they became a symbol of fertility.

Then, there is the "Mona de Pascua". This is given in Cataluña, Aragon and Alicante as a present. Very chocolatey and decorated with whatever comes to the mind. It is a tradition that godfathers give their godchildren a mona at Easter Sunday.

I always remember my cousin Ana. She always received from her godfather, the most beautifully decorated monas at Easter. I´ve found one picture of one of those years. I was spending some days with my aunt and cousins at Easter in Barcelona, and for that reason I was there when she got it.

For me it was enough to buy a chocolate egg (I´m crazy about chocolate) and when I opened it, I could get a chick.  The important thing for me was that my chocolate egg had to come with the chick.

Years later, when I had the chance to fly to the States, I discovered that there, at Easter Sunday, children spend the day looking for Easter eggs in gardens and parks, all beautifully coloured or wrapped in brilliant papers.

I even remember my sad attempts on this matter, when I wanted to empty real eggs (making two holes on each side and blowing really hard), to finally dye them and paint them and see them cracking, because somebody touched them without realising they weren´t hard  boiled.

And memories of a great holiday abroad with my family, comes to my mind, where our children (mine and my sister´s), had a blast hunting for eggs around the hotel gardens one fine Easter Sunday.

Ellos estaban muy contentos.
They were so happy.

And now, when I´m done with today´s post, I´ve realised that not long ago, somebody asked me if we celebrated this holiday in Spain, or if I followed this traditions, and I said that no, that we don´t colour easter eggs or hunt them in gardens and parks. Ok, now I went over my post again, looked at all the pictures I´ve put in here and I see that no matter what I thought,  I´ve had a closer relationship with Easter eggs than I previously thought.

HOY ES EL DÍA, PUES FELIZ PASCUA A TODOS.
TODAY IS THE DAY, HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!
