5. CUADERNO DE VIAJE, DUBROVNIK {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK, DUBROVNIK}

19 Agosto 2016 DUBROVNIK
  1. Located in the southermost part of the coast Croatian Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and is registered on the world cultural patrimony of UNESCO. The Adriatic Pearl, is lately a cool destiny for Europeans. The beauty of this city in the Dalmatian coast it´s not a secret for tourists anymore.
  1. The City, or Grad as the locals call it, has an exceptionally rich historical heritage and culture, which make Dubrovnik very popular among tourists who come to Croatia. Besides, let´s not forget that the Games of Thrones fans, I´ll included myself in this group, have had high dosis of walls and landscapes around Dubrovnik, so one or the other, I can say that I´ve walked along the walls were some of the scenes were filmed, which is not very important but it´s just a story to tell. The ancient Croatian port city Dubrovnik started to be used as a major stand in for outdoor scenes set in King´s landing. The scenic old city of Dubrovnik still has medieval walls right on the coast, which were well suited to depict King´s Landing. You can walk along the walls, it costs 10 Euros.
  1. To go into the old part of the city, is like to immerse yourself in the history of the eastern Mediterranean. It looked as if it was decorated by its unity and perfection. Although the walls and the old parts of the city belong to the tenth century, the city wasn´t planned, designed and built until before the 14th century. The term Grad, was coined by the proud citizens in the height of the Dubrovnik Republic when the trade, culture, and arts in Dubrovnik were at its peak and the city seemed to be the center of trade on the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.
  1. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1776, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. The preserved unique charm of the city was recognised by the world community in 1979.
  1. Our walking tour started after lunch, and I must say that the first time I walked along the walls I was a bit shocked because I couldn´t make up my mind about if I liked what I was visiting or not. The walls were too cleaned and manicured for me, they didn´t look as if they were ancient walls, I was even feeling a bit guilty myself thinking that it wasn´t the most beautiful city visited until that day. When we went through the walls and discovered the city center, represented in an unique example of well preserved urban complex, with a regular distribution of streets and squares dating back to the periods of Renaissance and Baroque, with its symmetrical streets, impossible to get lost because they all took you to the same place, my point of view about this city started to change. Ok, August is not the best month to travel here and there, but there´s nothing we could do. Besides, the midday heat made this visit a bit more complicated, at least for me.
  1. Obviously Old city, which is behind the walls, is by all means the most interesting and the most attractive part of Dubrovnik. It occupies a rather small city area. The best thing to do is walk and walk. It happened to me that while I was walking through such romantic city streets, I was feeling somehow that romantic atmosphere...rising from the ancient stone walls. The smell of aromatic herbs, and lavender which they sell in small sachets to take home. And if you look left or right through the narrow streets, you can see the sheets drying in the sun between the houses, something which we also do and that is very Mediterranean and which is something I love to do at home too. Our guide told us that to live so close to your neighbours in those narrow streets, leads into a constant chatter of the locals. The best way to learn and to feel a city is to merge with the crowd and let it take you through its streets.
  1. The Rector´s Palace is one o the museums you can visit while in Dubrovnik, where you can admire its first class collection of artefacts, furniture and arms.
  1. And we went back to the ship fed up of the heat and as the ship was leaving port very late at night, we dressed up again and went back to Dubrovnik to have a nice dinner and celebrate my birthday, the truth is that the city at night was stunning, full of lights and not so crowded. This was a good idea.
Así termina otro destino. Seguimos navegando. Restaurante Posat absolutamente recomendable.
  1. And another destiny comes to its end. We went on sailing. Posat Restaurant I absolutely recommend it.
