ESTAMBUL 3 (POR LA MAÑANA) {ISTANBUL 3 (IN THE MORNING)}

2 de Abril 2015 / 2nd April 2015

VISITA GUIADA POR LA MAÑANA.... - IN THE MORNING....GUIDED TOUR

  1. Once more I dream of Istanbul where light perfumes and Eastern tunes conspire to set my sleep on fire
  2. In my dreams, this city seems to sparkle in the evening sky
  3. and as I wander by Topkapi, I see treasures in the architecture,
  4. and jewels in the very stone that builds into the home or artefacts and in times bone by,
  5. this building was the East of many men who desired to steal what was within.

  1. We are again on our way to the next visit. It´s very early. This time we went to Topkapi Palace. It was built in 1453 and it was the center of the Ottoman Empire for ages. The Palace is so huge and has so many details to explain, that I´ve decided to make 2 posts out of one day, otherwise, this would be too long to read.
  1. The Ahmet fountain outside the imperial gates of the Topkapi palace.
  1. The palace was abandoned in 1853 and restored 50 years later when it became one of the most important museums of Istanbul, with patios, courtyards, doors and a huge harem. The palace rests on a privilegued hill, with the best view of the Bosphorus. Once you cross the Imperial Gate and leave Hagia Irene behind, you head towards the yard. This is huge!.
  1. Topkapi Palace was not only the residence of the Ottoman sultans, but also the administrative and educational centre of the state. Initially constructed between 1460 and 1478 by Sultan MehmedII, the conqueror of Constatinople. In the early 1850, the palace became inadequate to the requirements of state ceremonies and protocol, and so the sultans moved to Domabahçe Palace, located on the Bosphorus. Despite this move, the royal treasure, the Holy Relics of the Prophet Muhammad, and the imperial archives continued to be preserved at Topkapi. The Palace was converted into a museum on April 3rd 1924.
  1. Haia Eirene was the first church built in Istanbul by Constantine in the 4th century. The First Courtyard is reached through the Imperial Gate. This courtyard, were various ceremonies and processions were held, was the only part of the palace open to the public.
  1. We are in the second Courtyard (council Square), okay I hope I haven´t made any mistake with so many courtyards
  1. In this courtyard you can find the Imperial Stables, The Gate of Salutation (Middle gate) and the Imperial kitchens (picture below).....I´ll write about the kitchens later.
  1. It´s very early and there are groups of children from schools visiting the palace already.
  1. The day before didn´t stop raining during the night, but I think we´re going to be lucky again.
  1. Don´t you dare think the palace was empty, the truth is that I´m very lucky when I´m taking pictures, I try not to have everybody around when I finally chose a spot, but sometimes it´s just impossible. The building in the picture below is the Byzantine Water cistern. The Ottomans attributed great importance to water and there are still traces of Ottoman water culture at the Topkapi Palace. In Byzantine times, the Sarayburnu district in which the palace was built, boasted more than forty cisterns, channels and wells. One of these is the Byzantine cistern, which is thought to date back to the 5th century.
  1. Sometimes, to get a picture without people around is impossible.

  1. The Conqueror´s Pavilion, is one of the oldest structures of the Palace, constructed under Sultan Mehmet II in the years 1463-63. The structure which had originally wooden ceilings, was renovated during the 16th Century to adquire its present appeareance. The Conqueror´s Pavilion was initially built as a contemplation lodge, soon turned out to become a place where the items of the treasury were conserved. As the treasure was substantially enriched following the Egyptian expedition (well, everything they took from this place or another), terraces and porches were closed through walls in order to protect the highly valuable objects.
  1. To see the jewellery, there is a long and slow queue, so we took some pictures of the landscape, here and there and went on with our visit, this time by ourselves. We had two hours left to do as much as we could, I didn´t think it was enough time to see all these.
  1. Before going into the Harem, we went first to the Chamber of the Holy Relics. There are not pictures of them because they weren´t allowed. Located within the Privy Room, contains religious objects sent to the Ottoman sultans at various times between Sultan Selim the Grim´s assumption of the caliphate in the 16th century to the end of the 19th century. Among the most important holy relics to be collected, were the Holy Mantle of the Prophet, the hair from the Prophet´s beard, the reliquary in which was kept the Prophet´s tooth, and the footprints, letters, bow and sword of the Prophet. There are also holy relics attributed to other prophets. I can´t say this pavillion was so interesting to me, but obviously, it´s part of history. On the walls of this two-storey structure of four basic spaces are found high-quality Iznik tiles, wonderful by the way, dating to the second half of the 16th century.
  1. We also went into the Privy Chamber which is now the ward that is used as exhibition space for the collection of the Portraits of the Sultans. There are not pictures either, it wasn´t allowed.
  1. Little by little we walked towards the Harem. When I was searching for information about which Harem in History was the biggest one, I wasn´t surprised much when I read that this one, the one in the Topkapi Palace was number 1, the biggest of all but to tell you the truth, I was shocked when we were informed during our guided tour that this Harem had 400 rooms!!!. Well, the Harem itself contains more than 300 rooms, nine bathhouses (Turkish baths are famous worldwide), two mosques, a hospital, dormitories and a laundry. The basic plan of the Harem consists of consecutive courtyards surrounded by and interspersed with living quarters, rooms, pavilions and service buildings.
  2. The first pavillion we went through was the Eunuchs ´rooms and courtyards. They used to live the food for the Concubines and all the women who lived there, going through one side of the corridor, left the trays on those shelves on the picture below and then the women in charge used to pick those trays up.

  1. We crossed then the Main Gate .....(this is really huge). The door on the left leads through the Gallery of the Concubines. The door in the center leads to the Paved Courtyard of the Queen Mother, the first woman giving birth to the Sultan´s first son, and the door on the right, leads to the Golden Road and the sultan´s private apartments. You know, I know these places were for me the best example of the degradation of women and the tyranny of man, but I´ve always been fond of the stories about incidents of passion, intrigue and why not, love, inside those walls. I´m very happy I didn´t queue to see the jewellery because I enjoyed this visit more and we didn´t have enough time to visit everything.
EL HAREM - THE HAREM

  1. In the Harem, there were 4 wives, one favourite and 300 Concubines, who were Circassians, from the Caucasus, although there were Arab and black concubines as well. All were taken into the palace between the ages of 5 and 16. Their education was similar to that received by the boys of the Inner Palace, they would first be taught Turkish and the etiquette of the palace. The majority of concubines would be taken for employment as servants and they would, after an initial perior of training, be transferred to services related to the laundry, the bathhouse furnaces and meal service. Those deemed pretty and intelligent, howerver, would be trained by experienced women according to their particular aptitudes, learning such things as reading and writing, sewing, embroidery, music and dancing. Not all the concubines chosen and educated for the sultan would be taken into the Harem, some of these girls would be given in marriage to men of appropriate importance and would live outside of the palace.
  1. I can´t help it, I believe in romance and passion, I was sure I was going to find a love story inside the walls of this harem. This is the story of of Roxelana, who was known by many different names. Hürrem (Khourren, "the one who laughs") to the Ottomans, was Anastazja Lisowska who was born around 1505 somewhere in Ukraine. By 1520, Roxelana was abducted by Tartars and sold into slavery in the capital of the Turkish Empire, Istanbul. Soon, she was part of the harem of the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. He soon realised about her beauty because she was redhaired and she used to look at him straight in his eyes, which was something it was forbidden in the Palace.  Roxelana had 5 children with Suleiman, including the one who was going to be his successor, Selim. At that moment, there was already a heir, son of Suleiman´s first wife. Many theories have pointed Roxelana, to be the one who made the heir dissapear, even with an assasination attempt orchestrated by her to finally a forced exile. Anyway, it´s a fact that Selim finally was the first in the line of the Ottoman Empire.
  2. She was a very influential woman in the court of Suleiman. Although women did not have too much power, she managed to take over some political issues, and influence her husband in regard to some people in his goverment. When she died, she left the Sultan living in a black hole, in a major depression. He died in sorrow some years later, leaving the Empire in the hands of Selim, Roxelana´s son.
  1. The Throne Hall was located between the Privy Room of Sultan and the bathhouses, is the second largest domed space in the harem. The structures current state reflects the various repairs and alterations undergone over the course of centuries.

  1. The Privy room of Sultan Ahmed I. This room was also knew as the fruit room.
  1. The ornaments, tiles, drawings in these private apartments are spectacular, gorgeous. We are now in the Twin Pavilions and the Apartment of the Crown Prince.
  1. The walls are embellished with Iznik tiles while the golden decorations on the wooden dome are quite original, and the stained glass in the windows of the harem are just gorgeous.

  1. The Apartments of the Queen Mother, was connected by a passage to the Quarters of the Sultan. Basically composed of two rooms, the Bed room and the Prayer room.
La habitación del Sultán
  1. The Sultan´s bedroom
  1. The Apartments of the Favorites and The Chamberlain´s courtyard.
Y la piscina del Harem
  1. And the Harem´s pool
  1. And those walls covered with Ottoman´s tiles, so gorgeous. Here
  1. Besides the Palace tales and pavillions, I also find,, every now and then, beautiful windows where you can see awesome views through.
  1. I didn´t know Barbarossa lived in this period of history. I´ve heard about him of course, but I didn´t set him in this palace really. He was an Ottoman admiral and one of the most important corsairs in the 16th century during Suleiman´s reign.
  1. We are still inside the Palace and we are heading towards the kitchens. We don´t have much time left, we´ve been here for 2 hours, we could have stayed 4.
LAS COCINAS / THE KITCHEN
  1. The Palace kitchens and related facilities, are situated along the southeast side second Court, forming a self contained comple of buildings around a narrow courtyard of 170 metres in length. The complex covers a total area of 5250 square metres.
  1. Everyday the palace cooks prepared meals for the 4000-5000 people, members of the Birun (outer palace) ad Enderun (inner palace). Kitchens were known by different names according to the people they served. The first kitchen was known as the Royal Kitchen, and prepared food for the Sultan, his wives and daughters and the Privy Chamber. The second, prepared food for the highest officials, the sultan private household, and the other 6 kitchens for the pages, the harem guards and the women serving in the hospital, the chief partner and his staff, the black Eunuchs and the woen of the harem.
  1. The pottery pieces and the cookware are gorgeous.
  1. I´m attaching below the list of the menus that were prepared then. I didn´t know it wasn´t allowed to take pictures in the kitchens, the truth is that by the time the guard realised, I had taken many already.

  1. And with this guided tour around the kitchens, we left Topkapi feeling hungry. Before lunch, we´re going to go around the spice market.....
  1. This was crazy!. The biggest spice´s market I´ve ever seen, it´s wonderful. I was thinking I had to go there by myself, to smell, to feel, to taste.....I didn´t want to go around with our guide.
  1. The Spice Bazaar in Istanbul, is one of the largest and oldest bazaars in the city. It´s something similar to the "United Nations" of smells, you can find aromathic oils from Egypt, saffron from Iran or russian caviar...this is awesome!!. Spice Bazaar opens from 9 a.m. to 19 p,m everyday, except Sundays.
  1. Vividly coloured spices are displayed alongside lokum (Turkish delight), at this Ottoman-era marketplace, providing eye candy for the thousands of tourists and locals who make their way here every day.
  1. As well as spices, caviar, and sweets you can buy nuts, dried fruits and dried herbs for tea.
  1. The market was constructed in the 1660s, as part of the New Mosque, the rent from the shops supported the upkeep of the mosque as well as its charitable activities, which included a school, hamam and hospital. The market´s Turkish name, Misir Carsisi (Egyptian Market), references the fact that the building was initially endowed with taxes levied on goods imported from Egypt. In its heyday, the bazaar was the last stop for the camel caravans that travelled the Silk Routes from China, India and Persia.
  1. When we left the inner bazaar to go to the west side of the market, we realised there were outdoor produce stalls selling fresh foodstuff from all over Anatolia, including a wonderful selection of cheeses I had to try.
  1. And then the fiesta started, because when you open your mouth to taste something a person offers you to try, the rest of the sellers come to you to offer their goods and this is something I can´t resist. I was from one stall to the next with my mouth open, eating more cheese, olives and anything I was offered.
  1. First quality dried fruits....I was hungry.
El pescado mas fresco imposible.
  1. Fish really fresh.
  1. And also the fruit I know and the one I don´t know.
  1. Thank God our lunch time arrived, because one more bite and I wouldn´t be able to eat anything else. I´m going to end this post in the restaurant...before taking the boat......but I´ll leave this for another post.
