CUADERNO DE VIAJE 4 LISBOA, CASCAIS {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK 4 CASCAIS}

08.2011

We´re leaving Lisbon. We´re sorry, we could have stayed longer, there are so many things we have to visit. I think we should come back again.

Vamos a visitar Belém.

Lisbon's most monumental and historical area is Belem.

In Belém, there are two important things we´re going to see today.

Jeronimos Monastery , a World Heritage monument; Vasco da Gama's resting place  The Jeronimos Monastery is the most impressive symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India.

As we get closer to the Monastery, we can see the queue, it´s long, very long, I think it goes down the block!!!!.

Can you see the queue?. I´m really surprised my I. is going to queue. I think the inside of the Monastery is awesome.

We stood in the queue for 45 minutes!!!. I spent this silly time taking pictures of the highest part of the Monastery and also the lowest parts, left and right, I was fed up of queueing. Sun is killing us, at last we got inside.

Nos vamos hacia la Torre de Belém

We go towards Torre de Bélem.

It was from here that many of the great Portuguese explorers embarked on their voyages of discovery.

Prince Henry the Navigator and the first overseas expedition to conquer Ceuta in Morocco, Bartholomeu Dias to round the Cape of Good Hope, the first voyages of Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama to discover the sea route to India, and Christopher Columbus stopped here on his way back to Europe after discovering the New World.

We couldn´t reach the Tower. We went through the wrong way and this path ended up here. We have the sea in the middle and we didn´t feel like taking the car and going through the other side. We passed, but I took this picture from the other side.

From here and after having something to drink,  we drove to Cascais and looked over the beautiful coast. The weather was fantastic, we´re going to rest a few days in Cascais. 30 Km later we´re in.

We went to the swimming pool and had lunch there. We sunbathed and we went (both of us) to have a massage done together. I have to tell you that this won´t happen again, I couldn´t stop laughing and I think a person has to be relaxed when you´re getting a massage. Later on, we had dinner at the hotel buffet. This was a big mistake, the food wasn´t so good but we really felt good and relaxed, too lazy to take the car and drive to Cascais.

¡OTRO DÍA FANTÁSTICO!

ANOTHER FINE DAY!
